TherearemanylegendsabouttheoriginofHengshanMountain.Afterdeath,Panguturnedintomountainsandtrees,theheadintoMountTaiintheEast,thefootintoMountHuainthewest,thebellyintomountsonginthemiddle,therightarmintoMountHenginthenorth,andtheleftarmintoMountHenginthesouth;Ontheotherhand,EmperorYan,oneoftheancestorsofChina,chasedtheimmortalbirdinaShennongstyle,andbeatthezhuniaointoNanyuewithamagicwhip.Therefore,themissingbirdpatternwaspaintedonthememorialarchwayattheentranceofNanyueancienttown,andthe"zhuniao"ofNanyueMountainemblemalsocamefromthemountain.Theancientsoftenusedtheskymaptododivination,theso-called"therearestarsinthesky,andtherearecitiesintheearth.".AccordingtotherecordsofXingjing,NanyueislocatedonthewingofFuxing,whichiscalledHengshan.
