In1709(the49thyearofthereignofEmperorKangxioftheQingDynasty),thefirstmasterJiamuyangxiebadoji(allknowMiaoyinxiaojingang)returnedfromTibettohisancestralhometobuildatempletopromoteBuddhismattheinvitationofChahanDanJin,theSouthPrinceoftheYellowRiver,thefirstbannerofHeshuotetribeofMongoliainQinghai.Inthesummerofthatyear,themasterbroughthisdisciplestozhaxitan,wherehesawbeautifulmountainsandrivers,surroundedbyauspiciousclouds.Itwasanidealplacetobuildatemple.Thatistosay,webegantobuildtherabrangmonasteryhere.ThroughthecontinuousexpansionandimprovementofDaiJiamuyangmasterandthelivingBuddhas,ithasdevelopedintoagrandbuildingcomplexwithanareaof866000squaremeters,aconstructionareaofmorethan400000squaremeters,morethan90maintemples,morethan10000monkhousesandsixZHACANG(colleges),variousBuddhahalls,manylivingBuddhapalacesandlectureplatforms,Fayuan,Yinjingacademy,pagodas,Jiamuyangmastervilla,etc.Atitspeak,thereweremorethan3600monks.Thereare139templesunderitsjurisdiction,andthereligiousauthoritycoversGansu,Qinghai,Sichuan,Kang,Mongolia,NortheastChinaandXinjiang.ItisnotonlyasacredBuddhistBuddhisttemple,butalsoacomprehensiveinstitutionforspreadingknowledge,andaculturalandartisticcenterfortheTibetanpeopleinthewholeAmdoregion.WonthesecondTibet.
Ontheeveofliberation,therewere6sutrashallsand48BuddhisthallsinLabrangtemple.Amongthem,thereisonesevenstoreybuilding,onesixstoreybuilding,fourfourstoreybuildings,eightthreestoreybuildingsandninetwostoreybuildingsItcoversanareaofmorethan1000mu,includingfourbronzetileroofs,twogreenglazedtileroofs,31Tibetanbuildings,30livingBuddhahouses,6Jiwahouses,6bigkitchens,1printinghouse,2lecturehalls,2Jiamuyangvillas,morethan500Scripturewheelhouses,morethan500commonmonkhouses,severalpagodasandmemorialarchways.Thewholebuildingismajestic,rowuponrow,wellarranged,andcanbecalledthefirstfamoustempleinandorarea.Thesebuildingscanbedividedintostoneandwoodstructureandcivilstructure.Thereisasayingthatthereisnowoodoutsideandnostoneinside.ThearchitecturalformsincludeTibetanstyle,HanpalacestyleandTibetanChinesemixedstyle.
Afterliberation,becauseoftheinterferenceofthefarleftroute,LabrangTemplesufferedgreatdamage.ThesevenstorypozhangmaruoBuddhaHallwasdemolishedinthe"fourQingDynasty"andacinemawasbuilt.ThelargestBuddhastatue(24metershigh)inthehallwassmashedandmadeofsteelin1958.Tenyearsof"CulturalRevolution"isevenmoreunspeakable,aBuddhisttempleintoafoodfactory,slaughterhouse.Thetempledoorwasclosedandthemonksscattered.Thetemplebuildingonlyretainsthenorthwestcorneroftheoriginaltemple,accountingforaboutaquarteroftheoriginaltemplearea.Mostofthetemplesitesareoccupiedbygovernmentunits.
AlthoughLabrangmonasteryhasgonethroughmanyvicissitudes,sincetheThirdPlenarySessionoftheEleventhCentralCommitteeoftheCommunistPartyofChina,underthecareoftheChinesegovernment,ithasimplementedtheparty'sethnicandreligiouspolicies.SincethereopeningofLabrangmonasteryin1980,thestatehasallocatedmorethanonemillionyuanforthemaintenanceoftheoriginalSutrahallandBuddhaHall.
