Located1kmtothewestofXiaheCounty,daxiaheriverformsabasinbetweenLongshanandFengshan.TheTibetanpeoplecallitacornucopia,andLabrangtempleislocatedonthecornucopia.TogetherwiththeDrepungMonastery,SeraMonastery,Gandanmonastery,tashilumbumonasteryandtalmonasteryinQinghai,itiscalledthesixmajormonasteriesoftheGelugSect(yellowsect)ofLamaisminChina.LabrangisthetransliterationofTibetan"lazhang",whichmeanstheplacewheretheBuddhistpalaceislocated.
Thetemplewasbuiltin1709,the48thyearofthereignofEmperorKangxioftheQingDynasty.Thereare18magnificentBuddhisttemples,morethan10000monkhouses,numerousbuildingsandredwalls,withextraordinarymomentum.Amongthem,themostfamousisthesixZHACANG.Zacang,whichmeanscollegeinTibetan.ThesixchacangsarethesixBuddhistColleges:WensiCollegeofxiuxianzong,uppercollegeandlowerCollegeofxumizong,ShilunCollegeofastronomy,MedicalCollegeofmedicineandxijingangCollegeoflaw.Amongthem,Wensicollegeisthecenterofthewholetemple,withthreemainparts:fronthall,mainhallandbackhall.ThefronthallisforthestatueofKingsongzanganofTibet,andthemainhallishungwithaplaqueof"huijueTemple",whichwasgrantedbyEmperorQianlongofQingDynasty.Themainhall,with11bays,is100meterswideand75metersdeep.Ithas140columnsandcanhold4000lamaschantingsutrasatthesametime.Thehallisdecoratedwithcolorfulbanners,morethan100butterlampsandcigarettes.ItisaBuddhistatmosphere.Therearealsotwopulpits,asutrahouseandaprintinghouseinthetemple,withtensofthousandsofculturalrelicsandmorethan60000Tibetanclassics.
Thereare18"Lacan"inLabrangtemple."LAKANG"(Buddhisttemple)isthemeetingplaceforlamastochantscriptures.Amongthem,Shouxitempleisthelargest,with6floorsandaheightofmorethan20meters.Insidethehall,thereareabout15metershighBuddhastatuesofSakyamuni.Theroofissurroundedbygoldendragonsandthewallissurroundedbysilverlions.ItiswelldeservedtocallLabrangtempleahigherinstitutionofTibetanBuddhism.
