Thechainwasfoundedin1958byDanandFrankCarney.[2]TheOriginalPizzaHutbuildingwaslaterrelocatedtotheWichitaStateUniversitycampus.[3]Additionalrestaurantswereopened,withthefirstfranchiseunitopeningin1959inTopeka,Kansas.AtthesametimePizzaHutwasgrowinginandaroundKansas,Shakey'sPizzawasdevelopingastrongholdalongtheWestCoast.ThecompetitionprovidedPizzaHuttheimpetustoevaluateitsmissionanddirection.DanandFrankCarneysawShakey'sexpandingintotheirterritoryandrealizedthattheyneededtodetermineifPizzaHutshouldbeintheentertainmentbusinessorifitshouldbeaneighborhoodpizzarestaurant.Theydecidedtostickwiththeneighborhoodbusinessandrealizedthattheyneededtohaveagoodstandardimage.TheCarneybrothersbegantosystematizeoperationsandbuildingdesignstocounterthecompetitionfromShakey's.Thefranchisenetworkcontinuedtogrowthroughfriendsandbusinessassociates,andby1964auniquestandardizedbuildingappearanceandlayoutwasestablishedforfranchisedandcompany-ownedstores,creatingauniversallookthatcustomerseasilyrecognized.
By1972,with314storesnationwide,PizzaHutwentpublicontheNewYorkStockExchangeunderthestocktickersymbolPIZ.In1977,PizzaHutwasacquiredbyPepsico,wholateralsoboughtKFCandTacoBell.In1997,thethreerestaurantchainswerespunoffintoTricon,andin2002joinedwithLongJohnSilver'sandAWRestaurantstobecomeYUM!Brands.PizzaHuthasopenedPizzaHutExpresswhichspecializeinsmall6"pizzas.TheoldestcontinuouslyoperatingPizzaHutintheworldisinManhattan,Kansas,inashoppingandtaverndistrictknownasAggieville.
