TheSummerPalace,inHaidianDistrict,northwestofBeijing,isthemostcompleteandlargestroyalgardeninChina.Itisalsooneofthefamoustouristattractionsintheworld.Itbelongstothefirstnationalkeyculturalrelicprotectionunit.
TheSummerPalacewasoriginallytheImperialPalaceandgarden.In1750,QianLongwasrebuiltintoQingyiGarden.In1860,theQingyiGardenwasburnedbytheAlliedforcesofBritainandFrance.In1888,theEmpressDowagerCiXiembezzledNavyfunds3000taelsofsilverreconstruction,renamedthisname,asthesummerrecreationground.By1900,theSummerPalaceagain,theEightPowerAlliedforcesdestroyedmanybuildings.Repairin1903.Later,duringthewarlordsandKuomintangrule,theyweredestroyedagain,andaftertheliberation,theancientgardenswereregenerated.
