ShenCongwen'sformerresidencewasbuiltbyhisgrandfatherShenHongfuin1866.OnDecember28,1902,Mr.ShenCongwenwasborninthiscourtyardwiththearchitecturalstyleofMingandQingDynasties,wherehespenthischildhoodandadolescence.In1917,whenMr.Shenwas15yearsold,hejoinedthelocalarmyinWesternHunanbecauseofhisfamily'sdecline.Helefthishometownandtraveledintheyuan,LiandYoushuiriverbasins.Heexperiencedafull-blownwar,whichstimulatedhisdesireforcreation.In1919,Mr.ShencametoBeijingaloneandbeganhishardcareerasawriter.Hecreatedaseriesofliteraryworks,suchas"bordertown","Xiangxi",andsoonbecamefamousintheChineseliteraryworld,almostaswellasMr.LuXun,whowasmorethan20yearsolderthanhim.Afterthe1950s,Mr.ShendevotedhimselftothestudyofancientChinesecostumesandwroteamasterpiece,thestudyofancientChinesecostumes.

In1925,FenghuangCountywashitbyaseveredrought,andmostofthelandwasnotcollected.AfterMr.Xiongknewthenews,hesentarelieffundof100000yuantoDayang(amongwhichthefamousPekingoperaperformingartistMeiLanfangdonated40000yuantoDayang),helpingmanyvictims.Inhislateryears,Mr.XiongbecamethepresidentoftheRedCrossSocietyoftheRepublicofChinaandactivelyparticipatedinthebattlefieldrescueoftheAntiJapanesewar.OnDecember5,1937,XiongXilingdiedinHongKongattheageof67.
