
TheentrancehallofthetempleiscalledTheHallofHeavenlyKingsandistheshrineforMileBuddha(Maitreya)andtheHeavenlyKings(ortheDivasasarecalledinBuddhistsutra).Thestatueinthemiddle,themanwithabigbelly,isMileBuddha,whoiscommonlyknownastheLaughingBuddhabecauseheisalwaysgrinningfromeartoear.
HeisthefuturesaviorthatwilldeliveralllivingbeingstotheBuddhistparadiseafterSakyamuni’sBuddhistpowerisexhausted,andsoheisalsoknownastheFutureBuddha.ThecoupletonbothsidesisacomplimenttotheLaughingBuddha,meaningliterally:“Abigbellycanholdtheworld’stroublesthataretroublingpeople.Anopenmouthissmilingatthosewhoaretobesmiledat.”
Oneithersideofthehallwecanseetwostatues.TheyarethefourHeavenlyKings,whoareprotectorsofBuddhistdoctrines,witheachtakingcareofoneside-theeast,west,northandsouth.Itistheirjointeffortsthatensureharmony,peaceandprosperityoftheworld.Thefourobjectstheyareholding-a"pipa"(aChinesepluckinstrument),anumbrella,asnakeandasword-combinetomeanthatBuddhawillensureafavorableweatherforthecropssothatpeoplemayliveahappylife.
